Representative Work

Mike has developed a reputation as an innovative strategist who resolves civil disputes for his clients through litigation, mediation, and a number of other alternative dispute resolution forums as a member of the firm's Advocacy Group. He provides and facilitates creative solutions to complex and challenging problems with a view to providing prompt, practical and cost effective services to his clients. He has experience and interest in the following areas:

  • Advising clients on strategic approaches for the resolution of complex multi-party disputes
  • Complex Corporate and Commercial Litigation including contractual, commercial, and shareholder disputes 
  • Government and School Board Litigation including governance issues, election eligibility issues, and Trustee duties
  • Institutional Liability Litigation including employee sexual assault, breach of fiduciary duty and commercial host claims
  • Products Liability and Manufacturer's Liability Litigation including design and fabrication deficiencies
  • Construction Litigation including building/construction/design deficiencies, property loss, and delay claims
  • Class Action Litigation
  • Catastrophic Personal Injury and Fatality Litigation arising out of industrial accidents, motor vehicle accidents, and occupier's liability incidents
  • Insurance Litigation including first party claims (CGL, auto, SEF 44, E & O policies), complex coverage disputes, large loss subrogation matters, priority claims and SEF 44 defence

Profile

Mike has appeared as counsel before all levels of Court in Alberta, several other Western Canadian jurisdictions, and before the Supreme Court of Canada. He has extensive experience with large, complex multi-party litigation and is frequently involved in the resolution of claims through a multitude of forms of alternative dispute resolution. Mike is an accomplished litigator at both the trial and appellate levels and brings a wealth of problem solving experience to every dispute.

Mike has presented papers and lectured on a number of litigation topics before a variety of audiences. He prides himself on his role as a teacher, coach, and mentor for many of the firm's junior litigators. He currently sits on the firm's Professional Development Committee.
