Over the years, our firm has demonstrated a strong commitment to our articling program and students. We never hire more students than we need. We typically hire 3 or 4 students every year. The vast majority are invited to stay with the firm and no one has ever declined an offer.
There are no set quotas for hours or billings. We look for and attract self-motivated people who work hard because that is the way they are. We hire self-starters who want to take advantage of the opportunities this firm has and is prepared to share and develop with the assistance of our students and young lawyers.
Each articling student is assigned a principal who will ensure the student works with all of the lawyers and in all of our practice areas in Calgary and Edmonton. There is no formal rotation. Students are encouraged to obtain a broad base of experience and to seek out work that may be of particular interest to them.
The firm does not assign students or junior lawyers to particular practice areas. Articling students are the lifeblood of the firm. They are encouraged to have direct client contact. Our students are encouraged to observe, question, participate and be responsible for their own files.
Several former members of the firm have gone on to become Judges in the Court of Queen’s Bench and Provincial Court of Alberta. They include Mr. Justice Arthur W. Crossley, Mr. Justice Alexander A. Andrekson, Mr. Justice William E. Wilson, Mr. Justice A. W. Germain and Judge Jack G. Easton.
Nineteen of the firm’s twenty-three partners articled with the firm.
We are looking for people who can help us deliver excellent and timely services to our clients. We think the firm can provide articling students with an excellent opportunity to achieve professional excellence and job satisfaction.
Justine T. Lee, Kelly B. Nychka, Philip du Heaume, and William F.Donahue are presently articling in the Edmonton office. While this summer Wassila Semaine will commence her articles with the Alberta Court of Appeal.
